AMT Grads: Where are they now?

We interview our EMT course grads about their experiences and advice for the EMS field.

The Grads & Their Class Dates

  • Matthew W. (December 4 – 9, 2023 Skill Week)

  • Adrian A. (January 9 – 14, 2023 Skill Week)

  • David S. (July 11 – 17, 2022 Skill Week)

  • Claire G. (January 22 – 27, 2024 Skill Week)

Which roles, if any, have you had as an EMT or EMS provider since graduating?

Matthew: I now work a few shifts a month for Regions Hospital in Event Medicine. We work the State Fair, MN Wild and Frost games, concerts and events at the Xcel, River Centre, and Roy Wilkins Arena, St Paul Saints games and other events at CHS Field.

Adrian: For two years have worked as an EMT on campus at Macalester College and recently became Alcohol and Overdose Training Coordinator for the school. One year working with LifeTech EMS.

David: I started as a IFT EMT at my local EMS agency but I am now a full time 911 EMT with New Orleans EMS. I graduate paramedic school in 3 weeks and hope to join the tactical medic program within the next year!

Claire: Since June I’ve worked as an EMT for Allina EMS.

How do you feel Allied prepared you to work in EMS?

Matthew: The biggest thing I got out of it was patient assessment, and being able to recognize and treat initial life threats.

Adrian: Allied was a great place to learn from experienced professionals who were more than eager to pass down their knowledge to a new generation of emergency services providers.

David: As a FTO I’ve seen many students from other schools and comparing to those I feel like allied prepared me well.

Claire: Allied gave me a solid foundation to start me on my journey.

What advice would you give new Allied graduates?

Matthew: Never stop learning. Keep reading, keep watching training videos, listen to podcasts, and take any training offered to you.

Adrian: New EMTs should constantly put their skills to use when they have the chance. Volunteering or working, the world will benefit from the service you can provide.

David: For advice I would say that it’s ok to feel like you aren’t fully ready to be on the truck your first day! EMS is a job that is best learned on the street. Throw yourself in and be ready to learn.

Claire: My advice would be to stay humble and stay alert. Always be watching and learning from those around you.

Thank you Matthew, Adrian, David, and Claire for your valuable insights and, most importantly, being a part of the EMS community!
